Our Schools
"Attention Parents!"

As we head into the holiday season it seems that the number of activities increase. Be sure that your students get enough rest and down~time to recoup, so they can do their best in school. Thanksgiving break is just days away.
They'll have plenty of time for playing then.

Good communication with your student's teachers and advisors is a very important step in knowing exactly where they are in their studies, as well as any difficulties that they may be experiencing. Keep that connection with their school administrators strong to ensure that your student stays on the right track.

JDZ's mission aligns with the Camas School District mission to provide students with the ability to communicate effectively, use technology, reason, be self-confident, possess mental and physical health and work effectively with others. In broader terms, our mission is to create a 'learning community' where teachers, students and citizens are jointly involved in the advancement of knowledge and personal growth.

Our Facility
JDZ was built in 1968 and served as Camas’ middle school until 1996. It then became home to fifth and sixth graders through June 2006. In September 2006 JDZ becomes a preschool through grade five elementary school, one of five elementary schools in the Camas School District. Our school includes three clusters of classrooms, a building that houses the cafeteria and two gyms, and two portable classroom buildings. We have extensive outdoor areas for students and for community use and Camas Roots, a school community garden.

Come Visit
We are proud of our school and its programs. JDZ encourages the community to be a part of our school. Feel free to call us at 833-5710 for more information or to arrange a visit. Parent helpers are always welcome in classrooms, the library and school office!

Camas, WA 98607

Hayes Freedom High School is located in Camas, WA and is one of 2 high schools in Camas School District. It is a school that serves students in grades 9-12.

Alternative schools are public schools that offer nontraditional education for students whose needs cannot be met in a regular, special education, or vocational school. While alternative schools are distinct from regular, special education, and vocational schools in their teaching approach or classroom environment, they can provide similar services and/or curriculum for students. Alternative schools include schools for potential dropouts, residential treatment centers for substance abuse, schools for chronic truants, and schools for students with behavioral problems.

We're growing, building and moving! The 2009-2010 school year marks the second-to last move for the Hayes Freedom students and staff. While our brand-new school is under construction, we will be housed at the school formerly known as JDZ Elementary. Click here for a map of our interim location. We'll be relocating in July and re-opening our offices on August 17.

Our new school will be ready for staff and students in the fall of 2010. Click here for an architectural rendering.

WelcomeIn the interest of meeting the needs of all students in the Camas School District, the Camas School Board has approved the recognition of Hayes Freedom High School as a stand-alone high school designed to provide personalized instruction and individual attention for high school students who prefer to direct their own educations to a greater degree than is possible in a traditional high school model. Hayes Freedom is named after Denis Hayes, a Camas H.S. graduate who is credited with developing Earth Day, and Freedom for our cherished belief in the importance of this attribute in education.

We are a non-traditional school where students and staff can learn, grow, and experience life and education in a way that works for each individual. Projects and courses are designed by staff to align closely to district, state and national learning standards, but these allow, and in fact require, students to take control of their own educational plans. It is a place where students can find their own voices. Students learn quickly that they have both the right to their opinions but also the responsibility to listen to and respect the views of others.

Students at Hayes Freedom must be self-motivated, responsible, and willing to commit to both long and short term community based service learning projects. A premium is placed on student integration of learning across disciplines. Hayes Freedom students are required to analyze problems from multiple viewpoints and articulate comprehensive responses.

'Camas Schools... a Tradition of Caring and Quality'

What we believe about education
We believe that each student has worth and dignity as a human being and deserves to be treated with respect in every situation.

We believe that effective education results from a cooperative effort of community members, parents, students, and staff.

We believe it is the school’s responsibility to provide varied, wide-open channels for communication among parents, community members, students and staff.

We believe students will do what is expected of them and will work to improve if consistently confronted with high expectations by adults who demonstrate true caring.

We believe that modeling is a powerful educational tool. We teach academic and behavioral excellence by demonstrating high quality performance.

We believe school must be a joyful place. Everyone works hard at being the best that they can be. Students laugh and smile, secure in knowing what is expected of them. The climate is happy and satisfying to all concerned.
